I hope this morning’s news of an agreement between demonstrators and the government pans out, but in any event it is important to stay focused on the legitimate aspirations of ordinary people. This video should help:

I can only hope the violence will stop as soon as possible and that the early elections called for by Yanukovich today will help ordinary Ukrainians achieve their legitimate aspirations in a peaceful way.
If only all Ukrainians wanted the same thing, it would be simpler for everybody – especially for them.
Perhaps the recently announced truce (achieved with the help of the EU and unsupported by the Russians) will give enough time for dialog and negotiation and the early elections promised for December. Iulia Tymoshenko has been freed by parliament of one charge so there’s a possibility she’ll be able to leave prison for medical care in the West, giving the protesters one small concrete victory. I sincerely hope she stays out of the country if she does go – a drama queen is useful during a revolution, but can be a disaster as a prime minister.
The girls won the biathlon gold for Ukraine, producing a surge of good will in the country’s Parliament – there couldn’t have been a better day for it.
