Keeping US troops in Iraq and maybe southern Syria to prevent the Syrian Government backed up by the Russians from taking control of the oil fields in Eastern Syria strikes me as exercise in lunacy. (1), This violates international law. (2) The pipelines run west into Syrian Government controlled territory. We would have to engage in a massive trucking operation to get the oil out via Iraq or Turkey? (3) Who gets the oil revenues? (4) Are we suggesting that we will fight the Syrian Army and its Russian ally to hold on to the oil fields? I cannot open the WSJ article but it strikes me as too fatnastical to pay for it.
