Stevenson’s army, July 8

American Prospect notes how many former Biden staffers have come together in a “strategic consulting” shop, WestExec. Look at this Who’s who.
-The firm says they don’t do lobbying, which could be technically correct if they don’t personally contact officials.  You may recall that Obama barred lobbyists from his administration, with a few case-by-case exceptions. Trump allowed lobbyists and appointed a great many, but imposed post-government limits, which Politico says are widely circumvented.
-Who’s winning [losing?] in the pandemic, look at these comparisons.
What else could possibly go wrong? Politico suggests: Trump drops out, fires Pence; Biden gets sick…
-Duterte has a new law that looks as bad as China’s.
– National Interest says Zelensky is failing
China calls for US to cut nukes.
– NYT has book review of 1948 book — but it’s Hans Morgenthau’s classic, Politics Among Nations. You may recall I often quote his line that “the tools of a diplomat are logic, bribes, and threats.”

Stevenson’s army, June 26 afternoon edition

– You don’t have to wait for tomorrow’s WSJ. Already on line are two important stories:
-Administration plans multiple efforts to thwart Huawei.
– China warns US not to cross its red lines.
– A study says giving police leftover military equipment turns them into killers.
– Yes, Biden’s ahead by 14% and leads in the toss up states.  But I remember when our Dukakis -Bentsen ticket was up by 17% in August — and lost by 8%. As John Glenn used to say, “There are only two ways to run for office — unopposed, or scared.”

Stevenson’s army, May 24

– NYT, which has had powerful and innovative front pages in recent weeks — like the red unemployment charts — today fills its front page with brief identifications of several hundred coronavirus victims. Broadsheets have impacts you can never have online.
– On this Memorial Day weekend, NYT lead editorial says the US Army “celebrates white supremacy” with it many bases named after Confederate officials. There was an even better article on the same theme in WOTR recently.
-The pandemic is likely to slow if not scuttle European defense plans.
-Worst-case worries: election planners wonder if Trump will accept a loss.

– Congress is at it again — naming proposed laws to fit clever acronyms [or are they retronyms?]  Speaker Pelosi unveiled the House Democrats’ $3 Trillion wish list linked to pandemic relief. Section 1 of the bill reads:
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Health and Economic
Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act’’ or the
 ‘‘HEROES Act’’.
For extra credit, who remembers the words behind USA PATRIOT Act without resorting to Google?
